Robert Zemeckis is an awesome director responsible for such modern classics as "Back to the Future", "Forrest Gump", "Contact" and "Cast Away". One of his earlier efforts included a low brow comedy called "Used Cars" (1980). This movie is worth renting if you haven't seen it or you have not seen it lately. It stars Kurt Russell, Jack Warden, Deborah Harmon and Michael McKean & Michael Talbott (aka Lenny & Squiggy). The very un-politically correct plot and cast of characters will give you two hours of great laughs. It involves two used car lots across the street from each other. One is a slick, high dollar lot run by crooked Roy L. Fuchs, played by Jack Warden. The other lot is a ramshackle mess run by Roy 's honest-as-the-day-is-long brother, Luke Fuchs, played by Jack Warden. The not so subtle message, of course, is that the crooks make the money in this business.
I first saw Used Cars and thought it had every opportunity to be a real dog but with Zemeckis directing and some guy named Steven Spielberg as executive producer, they pulled off a very fun movie.
The highest grossing film of all time in the US is "Titanic" (1997) with box office receipts of $600 million ($1.8 Billion worldwide). Following in order of top US box office are "Star Wars" (1977), "E.T. The Extra Terrestrial" (1982), "Star Wars, Episode I" (1999), "Spider-Man" (2002) and " Jurassic Park " (1993).
Jack's (Leonardo DiCaprio) memorable line as he began to sketch Rose (Kate Winslet) was a mistake that was left in the movie. He asked Rose to "Lie back on the bed, uh, I mean couch." was scripted as "Lie on that couch". It was the first scene filmed with DiCaprio and Winslet and perhaps he was a little nervous. Director, James Cameron liked it and left it in. Also, the sketch of Rose with the necklace as well as all the drawings in Jack's book were drawn by Cameron.
Did you ever wonder why Storm Trooper in Star Wars wore those heavily plated uniforms but the protection was useless against the blaster weapon of preference.
George Lucas quite often includes a reference to his first major motion picture, "THX 1138" (1967) in subsequent films. You can see it on the license plate of John Milner's hot rod in "American Graffiti" (1973) which reads THX 138. Guess they only had six characters on California plates in 1962. "Star Wars" had Han and Luke telling the bad guys they were transferring Chewie to cell 1138. You can also see a somewhat cryptic graphic THX 1138 stenciled on the body of one of the robots in "Star Wars, Episode I".
