Movie Facts and Trivia

Bob Hope was born May 29, 1903 in London as Leslie Townes Hope. His parents emigrated to the US in 1907. As a young man, Bob performed in Vaudeville until he was cast in his first film, "The Big Broadcast of 1938" where he sang "Thanks for the Memory" which became and continues to be his theme song to this day. Hope has two entries in the "Guinness Book of World Records". One record is for the entertainer with the longest running contract, 61 years; the other is for most honored entertainer with over 1,500 awards of recognition. Hope's USO shows entertained thousands of troops from WW-II to Viet Nam . This Thursday, take a moment to remember a great comedian and true patriot on his 100th birthday. Thanks for the memories.

Rene Zellweger ("Chicago", "Down With Love") seems to be everywhere these days. Born in Katy , TX in 1969, Rene started, like most actors, with small parts in small movies. Her first movie role seems to be an uncredited appearance in "My Boyfriend's Back" (1993), "Love and a .45" (1994) and the classic "The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1994). When she landed the female lead in "Jerry Maguire" (1996) she established a solid career.

In the scene from "Jerry Maguire" where Jerry (Tom Cruise) meets Dorothy's (Zellweger) son, Ray (Jonathan Lipnicki) was completely ad libbed. Director, Cameron Crowe wanted the actors to feel the meeting so he had no dialog for that scene.

Two more notes on Jerry Maguire, it is the only (so far) movie appearance of former quarterback, Troy Aikman. Also, listed in the credits as "former girlfriend" is Emily Proctor. You now see her Monday nights on CSI Miami.

"Bullitt" (1968) gave us the standard for car chases. To film the scene, 2 Dodge Chargers and 2 Ford Mustangs were used and speeds exceeded 110 mph. Filming such a scene in the streets of San Francisco is very difficult so mistakes were bound to happen. For example, the Charger loses 3 hubcaps during the chase and 3 more during the final fiery crash. That's a lot of hubcaps. We can debate which car was faster but my money is on the green VW Beetle which the speeding cars pass three times during the 10 minute scene. Also, check out the mirrors on Steve McQueen's Mustang. When it is parked at the car wash, it has no side mirrors, when it leaves the car wash, it has side mirrors.

"The Wild One" (1953) starred Marlon Brando as the leader of a motorcycle gang which terrorized a small town was banned in England until 1968. In the movie, Brando rode his personal Triumph motorcycle.

The Captain America jacket worn by Peter Fonda in "Easy Rider" (1969) was designed by Fonda and made by "two little old ladies". To give the custom bike and clothes a used look, Fonda rode around Los Angeles for a week prior to production.

"Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" (2002) has a scene where Harry runs with Godric Gryffindor's sword. The safety tip on the sword can be seen.
