Movie Trivia:
Tough guy Humphrey Bogart's first professional assignment was the baby's face on a Mellins baby food jar early in the 20 th century. The sketch was drawn by Bogie's mother, Maude. Bogart was born January 23, 1899 but Warner Brothers promoted him as having been born December 25. They said that a guy born on Christmas can't be all bad.
Bogart met future wife, Lauren Bacall, on the set of "To Have and Have Not" when she was 19 years old in 1944. Director Howard Hawks said that Bogie actually fell in love with Bacall's character, Slim, so she would have to play the part the rest of her life.
George Lucas and Brian DePalma held dual auditions for "Carrie" and "Star Wars" and it was decided that Carrie Fisher would star in "Carrie" and Sissy Spacek would be Princess Leia. However, Fisher refused to do a nude scene in Carrie so the actresses' roles were switched because Spacek agreed to do the scene.
"Star Wars" was such a departure of the standard sci-fi fare that 20 th Century Fox came within days of selling their stake and taking a tax loss. When the movie previewed to audience delight, the studio changed their mind. It was released and made a zillion dollars. That movie probably saved the studio from bankruptcy.
In another ill-fated decision, the studio executives saw little or no value in the sale of "Star Wars" merchandise so they let Lucas have the rights for nothing. How things have changed. Now, merchandising is a major part of movie contracts.
Movies and popcorn are like beans and franks; they just go together. Here are some popcorn facts: Americans consume 1.1 billion pounds of popcorn annually. That's 58 quarts of popped corn consumed by every American man, woman and child each year.
About 1,600 kernels of popcorn will fit in a cup. The oldest ear of popping corn was found in a cave in New Mexico. It was 5,600 years old. We spend $1.7 billion on popcorn annually with microwave corn accounting for $1.1 billion of that.
Movie History:
Robert Redford was in a Maverick episode released in 1960. His first theatrical movie was "War Hunt" in 1962.
Next time you see 1958 movie "No Time for Sergeants" on the television, take a look at the pilots flying the bomber toward the end of the film. The co-pilot is none other that Cpl Klinger, Jamie Farr. You didn't think he was that old did you? Farr was born July 1, 1934 (in Toledo, of course). He debuted in "Blackboard Jungle" (1955) with Glenn Ford and Sidney Poitier. If you look, you will not find Jamie Farr in the credits. He was Jameel Farah back then.
All American lady, Teri Garr (Oh, God!, Mr. Mom) started in 1963 as an extra and dancer in some Elvis films. She finally got a speaking part in a Monkees movie called "Head".
Catch Jay Leno with Fran Drescher (The Nanny) in American Hot Wax. Leno has been in several films which he did not play the host of The Tonight Show.
Not to dis anyone, David Letterman's first (and last?) film was a 1994 ditty called "Cabin Boy".
Tom Hanks first film was a hack-em number called "He Knows You're Alone" (1980).
Sigourney Weaver started in 1977 with "Annie Hall". She played Alvy's (Woody Allen) date outside theatre.
American Graffiti had a cast of many future stars; Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Cindy Williams. Next time it comes on, look for the scene where a punk named Vic is hassling Debbie (Candy Clark) while Terry (Charlie Martin Smith) looks on. That is serious actor Joe Spano (Apollo 13, Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue) in his first movie.
