First off for this edition is a recommendation. If you haven't seen it, check out "Secondhand Lions" currently in a theatre near you. It is a wonderful story about a teenager (Haley Joel Osment) who has been dumped with two irascible uncles (Robert Duvall and Michael Caine). It was filmed around our town of Pflugerville , Texas . Everyone I know who has seen it gives it resounding thumbs up. The lion in the film posed no problem for any of the actors or crew but Osment was attacked by a pig during filming. Go figure. In the beginning and end of the movie, there are comic strips prominent to the scenes. These were drawn by Berkeley Breathed who draws the strip " Bloom County ".

Trivia Question:

What cowboy actor of the 30's was billed as Singing Sandy? Answer below.

Men's Journal this month has an article about the top 50 "guy movies" of all time. While these lists are always subjective, it's interesting to compare our individual tastes with the article's authors. In order to qualify as a "guy movie", the authors say that it should be a film that when put in a vcr/dvd will make a wife or girl friend go screaming from the room. They further say that this genre can be watched in groups of guys over and over again who can usually quote the entire script from memory. These movies have a minimum of dialog and a generous portion of action. Without further ado, here is their top ten and a few extras.

(1) Dirty Harry
(2) The Godfather
(3) Scarface
(4) Die Hard
(5) The Terminator
(6) The Road Warrior
(7) The Dirty Dozen
(8) The Matrix
(9) Caddyshack
(10) Rocky

Notable others :

(15) Bullitt
(22) Blazing Saddles
(33) Animal House
(37) Stripes
(40) The Great Escape
(41) The Three Stooges
(45) Office Space
(49) Cool Hand Luke

The authors also point out that Best Picture Oscar winner "The Deer Hunter" would have been included because it had hunting and Viet Nam war action but for Meryl Streep. A great actress, but her presence automatically disqualifies the film from any such list. I am not sure all of these meet the criterion of sending persons of the female persuasion screaming from the room but it is a good list. Personally, I would have added these great films that apparently were not deemed worthy of inclusion: Jaws, Goldfinger, Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Taxi Driver and Top Gun.

So guys, what are your favorites that your significant other just can't appreciate or understand the high art concept. Send me a message and let me know.

I believe it was comedian Richard Jeni who best described the difference between what men and what women like in movies. He said that men like guns, explosions, car chases, fistfights, aliens and breasts. Women like TALKING! My wife actually thinks a plot is important to a film. How quaint.

Anyway, I could find no such list as favorite "chick flicks" so I called upon my vast and unpaid research staff to come up with a list and this is what they like. Guys, pay attention. If she wants to watch one of these films, for two hours, show her you can sincerely appreciate her movie choice. C'mon, you can fake that standing on you head.

(1) When Harry Met Sally
(2) Sleepless in Seattle
(3) Pretty Woman
(4) Sweet Home Alabama
(5) Legally Blonde
(6) Lord of the Rings (both films)
(7) African Queen
(8) You've Got Mail
(9) Raiders of the Lost Ark
(10) My Best Friend's Wedding

Notable others in no particular order :

Runaway Bride
Miss Congeniality
Casablanca
Little Women
Charade
Waiting to Exhale
The Princess Bride

Well there you have it. Men are from the Planet Mongo and women are from the romance section of the local bookstore. Ladies, forgive us. We are pigs. Guys, be on the lookout for the perfect movie with enough action to keep you awake but a plot that might guaranty of some tears. How about "Waiting to Explode" or "Sleepless in Sing Sing" or "Miss Congeniality, Hit Sincerity" or "Fried Green Aliens" or "My Best Friend's Walther PPK" or "Romancing Sharon Stone".

Trivia Answer: John Wayne
