James Bond Movie Trivia

Depending on your age, you probably have a different view of who best represents the super spy, 007, "Bond, James Bond". I was in high school when "Dr. No" was released in 1962 so for me, Sean Connery IS James Bond but he almost was never 007. Ian Fleming, author of the Bond novels wanted Roger Moore to play the part but Moore was involved in making television's "The Saint". Also considered were Cary Grant and David Niven. Connery was selected after being recommended by producer Albert Broccoli's wife who had seen him in "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" (1959).

The fourth Bond film, "Thunderball" was actually supposed to be the first one but a legal issue involving the co-author put it on hold and "Dr. No" was selected to begin the most successful movie series in history. The budget for "Dr. No" was $1,000,000 but when it ran over budget by $100,000, United Artists wanted to dump the project for fear of losing their investment.

"Dr. No" trivia question: Bond films are known for their great gadgets; how many gadgets did James Bond use in the this film?

There have been six actors who played James Bond in the series (plus one spoof). Can you name them?

Sean Connery entered the Mr. Universe contest in 1953 and placed 3rd in the Tall Man Division. He was 32 when the first 007 movie was released and wore a toupee even then. He began losing his hair in his early 20's. He tells the story that he was taking martial arts training during the filming of "Never Say Never Again" (1983) when he angered the instructor who promptly broke Connery's wrist. The instructor was Steven Seagal.

Before breaking into acting, Sean Connery worked as a model for art students and as a milk delivery man. This is probably where all those milkman jokes started. Having played Bond seven time, Connery reports that his personal favorite is "Thunderball" (1965).

If you get a chance to watch "Dr. No" again, watch for these little trivia items. When Bond is visited in the night by a tarantula, it is obviously a body double for the bicep close up with the creature crawling on an arm. In other shots, you can see Connery's skin pressed against glass with the spider on the other side. Sean Connery has a great fear of spiders. Always on the alert for criminal activity, Bond pauses briefly to look at a painting in Dr. No's dining area. It is a reproduction of a Goya which (in real life) was stolen in 1960 and never recovered.

"Goldfinger" (1964) is considered by many as one of the best Bond films. As you may recall, a major portion of the movie takes place in Kentucky as Auric Goldfinger and his minions plan and execute a raid on Ft. Knox . Sean Connery never set foot in the US for this one. All his scenes were filmed at Pinewood Studios in England . Do you remember the scene where the gangsters are assembled in Goldginger's estate to hear about Operation Grand Slam? One of those guys is a young Garry Marshall (brother of Penny Marshall and director of numerous hits including "Runaway Bride" and "Pretty Woman").

Dr. No trivia answer: None (unless you count the geiger counter he sent for).
