Movie Trivia
There is a great scene in "Pretty Woman" (1990) where Richard Gere presents Julia Roberts with a diamond necklace to wear for the evening by opening the necklace's case for her to view. As Roberts reaches for it, Gere quickly snaps the case closed nearly trapping her fingers. Roberts laughs uproariously while Gere smiles at the joke he pulled. This was totally unscripted and Roberts reaction was so natural, they left it in the final version. In fact, it's one of the more memorable scenes.
When you see the tape or DVD of "Pretty Woman", you see Richard Gere and Julia Roberts standing back to back, sort of. That's Julia's head but the body belongs to model, Shelley Michelle. In addition to this publicity shot, Michelle has been the body double for Catherine Oxenberg in "Overexposed" (1990), Kim Basinger in "My Stepmother is an Alien" (1988) and Barbra Streisand's leg double in "The Prince of Tides" (1991). Also, notice that Gere's hair is brown in the photo but is graying in the movie.
I am a big fan of Law and Order: Criminal Intent on NBC. The talented Vincent D'Onofrio playing quirky detective Robert Goren makes for an enjoyable hour on Sunday evenings. Did you know that D'Onofrio played the hapless Edgar whose body was taken over by an alien after it's ship destroyed Edgar's pick up truck in "Men in Black" (1997)? Another memorable role is that of Private Pyle in Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket" (1987). For this role of serious under achiever transforming into serious psycho, D'Onofrio gained, then lost 70 pounds.
Dennis Quaid was just six years old when the first American was launched into space but he said that it was a major transforming event in his life. He went from dreams of being a cowboy to dreams of space travel. Living in Houston as a boy, Quaid said that his favorite astronaut was Gordon Cooper. Needless to say, he was thrilled when he was cast as Cooper in "The Right Stuff" (1983). At the time, Dennis lived only about three miles from Cooper in Los Angeles so he was able to spend lots of time with him to prepare the character. Next time you watch "The Right Stuff", check out the bartender. That's legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager, who was played in the movie by Sam Shepard.
Dennis Quaid also has a band, Dennis Quaid and the Sharks which draw big crowds when the perform. Quaid also wrote songs for three movies: "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia", "The Big Easy" and "Tough Enough". Watch for Dennis this winter playing Sam Houston in "The Alamo".
The western town built in New Mexico for "Silverado" (1985) was also used (and destroyed) in "Wild Wild West" (1999).
If you are a younger reader, you may not know much about the Marx Brothers but they were the comic geniuses of the 30's and 40's. Groucho, Chico , Harpo and sometimes Zeppo made some very funny, hip comedies. My personal favorites are "Monkey Business" (1931), "Animal Crackers" (1930) and "Duck Soup" (1933). Treat yourself to some fun and check these out. They contain such classic lines as "One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don't know" and "Remember, we are fighting for this woman's honor; which is probably more than she ever did."
