Forrest Gump Movie Trivia
Seen the movie "Forrest Gump" (1994) lately? Here is some interesting information. Tom Hanks made Gump one of our most endearing characters but can you believe that Bill Murray was also considered for the role. And we are all grateful that Terry Gilliam ("Twelve Monkeys", "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas ") declined the job of director. One of our greatest directors, Robert Zemeckis ("Cast Away", "Back to the Future") agreed to direct and created a winner.
Lieutenant Dan (Gary Sinese) had his legs blown off in Viet Nam and when you see subsequent scenes in the hospital, on the boat and with his artificial titanium legs, you would swear Sinese was a paraplegic but this was accomplished with use of computer enhanced cinematography. His lower legs were wrapped with a blue fabric to facilitate the computer making them "invisible". This is really well done when Dan arrives at Gump's wedding and the camera pans down to titanium legs in one continuous shot.
We didn't know who he was at the time but Forrest Gump, Jr. was played by 5 year old Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense) who also played Murphy Brown's child, Avery.
When Forrest is billeted at the Watergate Hotel by Richard Nixon, he calls in when lights in one of the rooms are keeping him awake. On the other end of the phone, we hear, "Security, Frank Wills." Frank Wills was the name of the real life security guard who found an open door that led to the discovery of the Watergate burglars.
True Lies Movie Trivia
Here's an interesting one about "True Lies" (1994). There is a scene where Arnold Schwarzenegger, hanging from the skid of a helicopter, plucks Jamie Lee Curtis from the sun roof of a limo just as the limo plunges into the ocean. That was actually Jamie Lee who you saw dangling from the helicopter as it flew over the ocean. She insisted on the dangle and the scene was filmed on her birthday, November 22.
For the filming of the scenes with USMC Harriers, the production company paid the Feds over $100,000 for three of them at a rate of $2,400/hour. And, of course, Arnold learned to take off and land the jets for the film.
