Bobby Jones was a god of golf in the early days of the 20th century. He was Tiger Woods long before there was Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer of Jack Nicklaus. The movie depicts young Robert Tyre Jones growing up in Atlanta and learning the game emulating his father and other adult golfers. But, as with other golf movies, it is about more than that silly game. The movie spends much of it's time exploring Jones' difficulties; mental, emotional, physical & family. So I guess the real theme is perseverance. Its about overcoming great obstacles by believing in yourself and focusing on the goal. Bobby Jones won an amazing 62% of the championships he entered from 1926-1930. By today's standards he would be winning $12-15 million a year. Two things remain remarkable about his fetes. First, he never turned professional but competed only as an amateur while getting a degree in engineering and completing law school. Second, he retired from competitive golf at 28 years of age. For golfers, I give this a 4 on a scale of 5. Jones was one of the pioneers in golf's history and we need to know more about him. For non-golfers, I give it a 2.5. Golf and golf movies tend to drag along slowly but the film is worth viewing just for the early 20th century period look and feel. |
